Why renew your domain on time?

Renewing your domain before expiry is critical for maintaining your online presence:

  • Prevent website downtime: Expired domains stop resolving, making your website inaccessible
  • Maintain email service: Email stops working when domains expire
  • Avoid redemption fees: Late renewal during redemption costs R1,500+ extra
  • Protect your brand: Expired domains can be registered by competitors or squatters
  • Preserve SEO rankings: Search engines may derank or deindex expired domains
  • Maintain customer trust: Expired domains signal unprofessionalism
  • Keep email history: Expired domains mean lost email access

When to renew your domain

Best practices:

  • Renew 30-60 days early: Avoid last-minute issues and ensure continuity
  • Before expiry: Standard renewal pricing applies
  • During grace period: 0-30 days after expiry, still standard pricing
  • Before redemption: Avoid R1,500+ redemption fees

Renewal timing options:

  • Proactive renewal: Renew when you receive the first reminder (30 days before expiry)
  • Multi-year renewal: Renew for 2-5 years to reduce renewal frequency
  • Auto-renewal: Enable automatic renewal to never worry about expiry (see Auto-Renewal Guide)

Troubleshooting renewal issues

Issue: Renewal button disabled or missing

If you cannot find the renewal option:

  • Check domain status: If in redemption or pending delete, contact support
  • Payment overdue: Pay any outstanding invoices first
  • Account suspended: Contact support to resolve account issues
  • Domain transferred away: Verify domain is still in your account

Issue: Payment fails

If your renewal payment fails:

  • Credit card declined: Check card details, expiry date, and available balance
  • EFT not received: Verify correct reference number and banking details were used
  • PayFast error: Try alternative payment method or contact support
  • Account credit insufficient: Add more credit or use alternative payment method

Issue: Domain still expired after renewal payment

If domain shows expired after you paid:

  1. Check your email for payment confirmation
  2. Allow 24 hours for registry processing
  3. Check invoice status in the client area (Billing β†’ My Invoices)
  4. If payment marked "Paid" but domain still expired after 24 hours, contact support

Issue: Missed renewal window

If you missed the renewal and your domain expired:

  • 0-30 days expired: Renew immediately at standard price
  • 30+ days expired: Contact support immediately for redemption
  • Past 60 days: Domain may be in pending delete or already deleted
