What is the domain lifecycle?

The domain lifecycle describes the various phases a domain name goes through from initial registration to eventual deletion. Understanding these phases helps you manage domain renewals effectively and avoid losing valuable domains.

Why understanding the lifecycle matters:

  • Prevent domain loss: Know when you can still recover an expired domain
  • Avoid extra fees: Redemption recovery is expensive (R1,500-R3,000+)
  • Plan renewals: Understand when to renew to avoid service interruption
  • Protect your brand: Don't let competitors or squatters acquire your expired domain
  • Maintain SEO: Domain expiry can harm search engine rankings

Phase 1: Active registration

What it is:

The normal, active state of your domain. This is the period between registration/renewal and the expiry date.

Duration:

  • Typically 1 year (can be 1-10 years depending on registration period)
  • Starts on registration date
  • Ends on expiry date

Domain status:

  • Status: Active
  • Website: Fully functional
  • Email: Fully functional
  • DNS: Resolving normally
  • Renewal cost: Standard annual renewal price
  • Transfer allowed: Yes (after 60-day lock period)

What you can do:

  • Renew the domain (extend registration period)
  • Update WHOIS information
  • Change nameservers
  • Modify DNS records
  • Transfer to another registrar
  • Enable/disable registrar lock
  • Enable/disable auto-renewal

Renewal recommendations:

  • Best practice: Renew 30-60 days before expiry
  • Enable auto-renewal: Prevents accidental expiry (see Auto-Renewal Guide)
  • Set calendar reminders: Even with auto-renewal, maintain awareness of expiry dates
  • Keep payment methods current: Ensure credit cards and payment details are up to date

Phase 2: Expiry

What it is:

The moment your domain registration period ends. This is the expiry date shown in the client area and WHOIS.

What happens on expiry:

  • Domain stops resolving (usually): Website and email may stop working
  • Nameservers may be changed: Some registrars park the domain immediately
  • Parked page displayed: "Domain expired" or registrar advertising page
  • Email stops working: MX records may be removed or overridden
  • Domain enters grace period: Automatic transition to next phase

Important notes:

  • Not all registrars disable immediately: Some allow a few days of continued service
  • 0724 Hosting practice: We typically allow a grace period before disabling services
  • International vs .za: Grace period policies differ between ICANN and ZACR

Phase 3: Grace period (Auto-Renew Grace Period)

What it is:

A short period after expiry during which you can renew the domain at the standard renewal price without additional fees.

Duration:

  • International domains (.com, .net, .org): 0-45 days (varies by registry)
    • .com: Up to 30 days
    • .net: Up to 30 days
    • .org: Up to 30 days
  • .za domains (.co.za, .net.za, .org.za): 30 days grace period (ZACR policy)

Domain status during grace period:

  • Status: Expired (Grace Period)
  • Website: Usually offline (parked page or not resolving)
  • Email: Usually not working
  • DNS: May be parked or disabled
  • Renewal cost: Standard renewal price (no extra fees)
  • Transfer allowed: No (transfers blocked during grace and redemption)

What you can do:

  • Renew the domain: Standard renewal price applies
  • No penalty fees: Grace period renewal is the same cost as pre-expiry renewal
  • Immediate restoration: Domain services typically restored within 24 hours after renewal

How to renew during grace period:

  1. Log in to the client area at ca.0724.co.za
  2. Go to Domains β†’ My Domains
  3. Find the expired domain (status will show "Expired" or "Grace")
  4. Click Renew
  5. Select renewal period (1+ years)
  6. Complete payment
  7. Domain reactivates within 24 hours

Grace period best practices:

  • Act immediately: Don't wait β€” renew as soon as you notice expiry
  • Grace period is limited: After grace ends, expensive redemption fees apply
  • Contact support: If you need DNS restored urgently, contact support

Phase 4: Redemption period (Redemption Grace Period)

What it is:

After the grace period ends, domains enter redemption. This is a registry-imposed penalty period where recovery is possible but expensive.

Duration:

  • International domains (.com, .net, .org): 30 days
  • .za domains: 30 days (ZACR policy)

Domain status during redemption:

  • Status: Redemption Period
  • Website: Offline
  • Email: Not working
  • DNS: Disabled
  • Renewal cost: Standard renewal + Redemption fee (R1,500-R3,000+)
  • Transfer allowed: No

Redemption fees:

Redemption recovery requires payment of two fees:

  • Standard renewal fee: Annual registration cost (e.g., R150 for .co.za)
  • Redemption recovery fee: Registry penalty (R1,500-R3,000+ depending on TLD)
    • .com redemption: ~R1,800
    • .net redemption: ~R1,800
    • .co.za redemption: ~R1,500
    • Fees vary by registry

How to recover a domain in redemption:

  1. Contact 0724 Hosting support immediately
  2. Provide the domain name
  3. Support will provide redemption quote (renewal + recovery fee)
  4. Pay the redemption invoice
  5. Domain is restored within 24-72 hours
  6. You cannot redeem domains yourself through the client area β€” must contact support

Why is redemption so expensive?

  • Registry penalty: Registries impose high fees to discourage domain neglect
  • Manual process: Redemption requires manual intervention at the registry
  • Incentivizes renewal: High cost encourages timely renewal
  • Prevents squatting: Makes it expensive to let domains expire intentionally

Phase 5: Pending delete

What it is:

After redemption expires without recovery, domains enter a final 5-day "pending delete" status. During this time, the domain CANNOT be recovered under any circumstances.

Duration:

  • All TLDs: 5 days
  • Countdown to permanent deletion

Domain status during pending delete:

  • Status: Pending Delete
  • Website: Offline
  • Email: Not working
  • DNS: Disabled
  • Renewal cost: Cannot renew
  • Recovery: Impossible
  • Transfer allowed: No

What you can do:

  • Nothing: Domain is locked for deletion and cannot be recovered
  • Prepare to re-register: Watch for deletion and attempt to re-register immediately
  • Accept loss: Domain will be available to the general public after deletion

Why pending delete exists:

  • Allows registry time to process deletion
  • Prevents last-minute registry errors
  • Ensures fair release of domains back to the public pool

Phase 6: Deletion and release

What it is:

The domain is permanently deleted from your account and released back into the available domain pool. Anyone can now register it.

When it happens:

After the 5-day pending delete period completes. Total time from expiry to deletion:

  • .com/.net/.org: Approximately 75-80 days (30 grace + 30 redemption + 5 pending delete + 10 days registry buffer)
  • .za domains: Approximately 65 days (30 grace + 30 redemption + 5 pending delete)

What happens after deletion:

  • Domain becomes available: Anyone can register it
  • Drop catching: Automated services attempt to register valuable domains the moment they drop
  • Premium pricing: Some registries may relist popular domains at premium prices
  • SEO loss: Search engine rankings, backlinks, and domain authority are lost
  • Email loss: All email accounts associated with the domain are permanently lost
  • No relationship to previous owner: You have no special rights to re-register

Re-registering after deletion:

If you want to get your domain back after deletion:

  1. Monitor the domain status closely
  2. Use domain availability monitoring tools
  3. Attempt to re-register the moment it becomes available
  4. Be prepared to compete with drop-catching services
  5. Success not guaranteed: High-value domains are often caught by automated services

Differences between ICANN and ZACR lifecycle

International domains (ICANN - .com, .net, .org):

  • Grace period: 0-30 days (varies by registry)
  • Redemption: 30 days
  • Pending delete: 5 days
  • Total recovery window: ~60-75 days from expiry
  • Auto-renewal grace: Some registries allow auto-renewal during early grace period

.za domains (ZACR - .co.za, .net.za, .org.za):

  • Grace period: 30 days
  • Redemption: 30 days
  • Pending delete: 5 days
  • Total recovery window: ~65 days from expiry
  • Consistent policy: All .za domains follow the same lifecycle

How to prevent domain expiry

1. Enable auto-renewal

2. Set up renewal reminders

  • Add domain expiry dates to your calendar
  • The client area sends renewal notices at 30, 15, and 7 days before expiry
  • Ensure registrant email is current and monitored

3. Renew for multiple years

  • Register/renew for 2-5 years to reduce renewal frequency
  • Reduces risk of forgetting to renew
  • May offer cost savings

4. Keep contact details current

  • Update WHOIS registrant email if you change email addresses
  • Ensure payment methods (credit cards) are up to date
  • Update billing email in client area account

5. Monitor multiple channels

  • Check client area regularly
  • Monitor email for renewal notices
  • Set independent calendar reminders

What happens to your services when domain expires

Website:

  • Hosted with 0724: Website remains on server but domain doesn't resolve (visitors see "site cannot be reached")
  • External hosting: Website remains on external hosting but domain doesn't resolve
  • After renewal: Website becomes accessible again within 24-48 hours (DNS propagation)

Email:

  • Incoming email: Bounces back to sender (mailbox not found error)
  • Outgoing email: Cannot send from expired domain
  • After renewal: Email functionality restored within 24-48 hours
  • Lost emails: Emails sent during expiry period are lost and cannot be recovered

DNS records:

  • During grace/redemption: DNS may be disabled or pointed to parked page
  • After renewal: DNS records are restored (if hosted with registrar)
  • External DNS: If using external nameservers, DNS continues working (but domain may not resolve correctly)

Cost comparison: Timely renewal vs redemption

Example: .co.za domain

  • Normal renewal (before/during grace): R150/year
  • Redemption recovery: R150 renewal + R1,500 redemption fee = R1,650
  • Savings by renewing on time: R1,500 (10x more expensive in redemption)

Example: .com domain

  • Normal renewal (before/during grace): R300/year
  • Redemption recovery: R300 renewal + R1,800 redemption fee = R2,100
  • Savings by renewing on time: R1,800 (7x more expensive in redemption)
