What is domain auto-renewal?
Domain auto-renewal is a feature that automatically renews your domains before they expire, eliminating the risk of forgetting to renew and losing your domain.
How auto-renewal works:
- You enable auto-renewal for a domain in the client area
- As the domain's expiry date approaches (typically 14-30 days before), The client area generates a renewal invoice
- The system automatically charges your default payment method
- If payment succeeds, the domain renews automatically
- You receive email confirmation of renewal
- Your domain never expires
Benefits of auto-renewal:
- Never lose your domain: Protection against accidental expiry
- No service interruption: Website and email continue working
- Hands-off management: Set it once, forget about it
- Avoid redemption fees: No expensive recovery costs (R1,500+)
- Protect your brand: Domains can't be taken by competitors
- Maintain SEO: No search engine ranking loss due to expiry
- Peace of mind: Critical domains are always renewed

Method 3: Enable by default for new registrations
Set auto-renewal as default for future domain registrations:

- Enable "Auto-renew domains by default" if available
- New domain registrations will have auto-renewal enabled automatically
Note: Availability depends on client area configuration. Contact support if you cannot find this option.
How auto-renewal billing works
Invoice generation:
- Timing: Renewal invoices generated 14-30 days before domain expiry (varies by client area settings)
- Email notification: You receive an invoice notification email
- Invoice status: Invoice shows as "Unpaid" initially
- Payment window: Invoice due date typically matches or slightly precedes domain expiry
Automatic payment:
- Payment attempt: The client area automatically attempts to charge your default payment method on the invoice due date
- Credit card: Charges credit card on file
- Account credit: Deducts from account credit balance if sufficient funds available
- Payment success: Invoice marked "Paid", domain renews automatically
- Payment failure: Invoice remains unpaid, auto-renewal fails (see troubleshooting below)
Renewal confirmation:
- Payment receipt: Email confirmation of successful payment
- Domain renewal confirmation: Email confirming domain was renewed
- Updated expiry date: New expiry date visible in the client area
- Updated WHOIS: New expiry date in public WHOIS within 24 hours
Payment methods for auto-renewal
Credit card (recommended):
- Best for auto-renewal: Automatic, reliable, no manual intervention
- How to add: Billing β Payment Methods β Add Credit Card
- Keep updated: Update card before expiry date
- Set as default: Ensure it's set as the default payment method
Account credit:
- Works if sufficient balance: Auto-renewal deducts from credit balance
- Risk: If balance runs out, auto-renewal fails
- Best practice: Maintain buffer balance or use credit card as backup
- How to add credit: Billing β Add Funds
EFT/Bank transfer (not recommended for auto-renewal):
- Manual process: EFT requires manual payment after invoice
- Not truly automatic: You still need to make the transfer manually
- Use case: Only if you prefer manual payment but want renewal reminders
Auto-renewal notifications and reminders
Emails you'll receive:
- Invoice generated (14-30 days before expiry): "Your renewal invoice is ready"
- Payment reminder (7-14 days before): "Invoice due soon" (if unpaid)
- Payment attempt notification: "Payment processed" or "Payment failed"
- Renewal confirmation: "Domain renewed successfully"
Payment failure notifications:
If auto-renewal payment fails:
- Immediate notification: Email alert that payment failed
- Reason provided: "Credit card declined", "Insufficient credit", etc.
- Action required: Update payment method or pay invoice manually
- Retry window: You typically have a few days to resolve before domain expires
Checking auto-renewal status
For a single domain:
- Log in to the client area
- Go to Domains β My Domains
- Click the domain name
- Check "Auto Renew" status:
- Enabled: Domain will auto-renew
- Disabled: Manual renewal required
For all domains:
- Go to Domains β My Domains
- Look for "Auto Renew" column in the domains list
- Icons or text indicate status:
- Green checkmark or "Yes" = Enabled
- Red X or "No" = Disabled
- Sort by auto-renewal status to see all enabled/disabled domains
Troubleshooting auto-renewal failures
Issue: Auto-renewal failed β credit card declined
If your credit card was declined:
- Expired card: Update card expiry date or add new card
- Insufficient funds: Ensure sufficient credit limit
- Card security block: Contact your bank to authorise international/online transactions
- Card details changed: Update card number if you received a replacement card
- Manual payment: Pay the invoice manually via EFT or different card
Issue: Auto-renewal failed β insufficient account credit
If account credit balance is too low:
- Add more credit: Billing β Add Funds
- Alternatively, add a credit card as backup payment method
- Pay invoice manually if domain is about to expire
Issue: Auto-renewal enabled but invoice not generated
If domain is approaching expiry but no invoice:
- Check domain status in the client area β may already be renewed
- Verify auto-renewal is actually enabled (check domain details)
- Check spam folder for invoice emails
- Contact support if within 7 days of expiry and no invoice received
Issue: Payment succeeded but domain not renewed
If payment was processed but domain still shows as expiring:
- Wait 24 hours for registry processing
- Check invoice status (should show "Paid")
- Check domain expiry date β may have been updated
- If still not renewed after 24 hours, contact support
Issue: Auto-renewal disabled without my action
If auto-renewal was disabled automatically:
- Repeated payment failures may cause auto-renewal to be disabled
- Domain transfers reset auto-renewal status (need to re-enable)
- Account suspension may disable auto-renewal
- Re-enable auto-renewal and update payment method
When to use auto-renewal
Domains that should have auto-renewal enabled:
- Primary business domain: Your main website address
- Email domains: Domains used for business email
- Brand protection domains: Alternate TLDs (.com, .net if you have .co.za)
- Critical services: Domains used for APIs, apps, or services
- Long-term projects: Domains you plan to keep indefinitely
Domains that can use manual renewal:
- Temporary projects: Domains you may not renew
- Test domains: Experimental or development domains
- Uncertain domains: Domains you're evaluating for continued use
- Portfolio domains: Domains held for resale or future use
Auto-renewal best practices
- Enable for critical domains: Always enable auto-renewal for business-critical domains
- Keep payment methods current: Update credit card expiry dates proactively
- Maintain account credit buffer: Keep R500-R1,000 credit as backup (optional)
- Monitor renewal emails: Read invoice and renewal confirmation emails
- Review annually: Check auto-renewal settings once per year
- Update after transfers: Re-enable auto-renewal after transferring domains
- Whitelist emails: Add noreply@0724.co.za to contacts to ensure notifications are received
- Document settings: Keep a list of which domains have auto-renewal enabled
Auto-renewal and domain transfers
Transferring domains out of 0724 Hosting:
- Auto-renewal disabled during transfer: Domains in transfer cannot auto-renew
- Renew before transfer: Consider renewing before initiating transfer to avoid expiry during transfer
- Transfer includes renewal: Most transfers add 1 year to registration period
Transferring domains to 0724 Hosting:
- Auto-renewal not transferred: Auto-renewal settings do not carry over from old registrar
- Must re-enable: After transfer completes, enable auto-renewal in the client area
- Set up payment method: Add credit card or credit to new client area account
Cost of auto-renewal
No additional fees:
- Same cost as manual renewal: Auto-renewal costs exactly the same as manual renewal
- No convenience fees: No extra charges for using auto-renewal
- Standard renewal pricing: Annual renewal cost for the domain extension (e.g., R150 for .co.za)
Savings compared to late renewal:
- Avoid grace period risk: No service interruption
- Avoid redemption fees: Redemption costs R1,500-R3,000+ extra
- Prevent domain loss: Cannot be re-registered by competitors
Auto-renewal and POPIA compliance
Under South Africa's POPIA (Protection of Personal Information Act), auto-renewal practices must be transparent:
- Clear disclosure: 0724 Hosting clearly indicates auto-renewal status
- Easy to disable: You can disable auto-renewal at any time
- Advance notice: Invoice notifications sent before payment
- Payment failure notifications: Immediate alert if auto-renewal fails
