Why upgrade or downgrade your hosting?

Reasons to upgrade:

  • Website growth: More visitors, traffic exceeding current plan limits
  • Resource needs: Need more disk space, bandwidth, or databases
  • Performance: Require faster loading times and more CPU/RAM resources
  • Additional features: Need premium features available in higher plans
  • Email accounts: Require more email accounts or storage
  • Domain hosting: Need to host more addon domains

Reasons to downgrade:

  • Cost savings: Current plan exceeds your actual usage
  • Business changes: Reduced traffic or fewer resource requirements
  • Temporary scale-down: Seasonal business adjustments
  • Overprovisioning: Initially chose a larger plan than needed

Before upgrading or downgrading

Review current usage:

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin (via the client area Services β†’ Log in to DirectAdmin)
  2. Check your resource usage:
    • Disk space used vs available
    • Bandwidth usage
    • Number of email accounts
    • Number of databases
    • Number of addon domains
  3. Determine if you need more resources (upgrade) or have excess (downgrade)

Compare hosting plans:

  • Visit the 0724 Hosting plans page to compare features
  • Check disk space, bandwidth, and email account limits
  • Review pricing differences
  • Note any feature additions or removals

Backup your website (recommended):

  • While upgrades/downgrades are seamless, always maintain backups
  • Use DirectAdmin β†’ JetBackup to create a backup before making changes
  • Download critical files and databases as extra precaution

  • Price difference: The client area shows the prorated cost or credit
  • Upgrade options: Choose the plan that meets your needs

Step 6: Select upgrade type

Choose when the upgrade should take effect:

Option 1: Immediate upgrade (recommended)

  • When: Upgrade processes immediately after payment
  • Cost: Pay prorated difference for remaining billing period
  • Best for: Urgent resource needs, website performance issues

Example calculation: Current plan R200/month, new plan R400/month, 15 days left in billing cycle:

Prorated cost = (R400 - R200) Γ— (15 days / 30 days) = R100

Option 2: Upgrade at next renewal

  • When: Upgrade takes effect on your next renewal date
  • Cost: No immediate payment, new pricing starts next billing cycle
  • Best for: Non-urgent upgrades, budget planning

Step 7: Add to cart and checkout

  1. Review upgrade summary:
    • Current plan β†’ New plan
    • Price difference
    • Effective date
  2. Click Continue or Add to Cart
  3. You will be taken to the shopping cart

  4. Click Complete Order
  5. Complete payment

Step 9: Upgrade processing

After payment:

  • Immediate: Upgrade processes automatically within 15-30 minutes
  • No downtime: Website remains online during upgrade
  • Resource limits updated: New disk space, bandwidth, and feature limits applied
  • Email confirmation: You receive upgrade confirmation email
  • DirectAdmin updated: Log in to DirectAdmin to verify new resource limits

How to downgrade your hosting package

Step 1-4: Same as upgrade

Follow steps 1-4 from the upgrade instructions above (Log in β†’ Services β†’ Select service β†’ Upgrade/Downgrade)

Step 5: Choose new (lower) hosting package

  • Select a plan with lower resources than your current plan
  • Review new limits to ensure they meet your minimum requirements
  • Important: Ensure your current usage fits within new plan limits

Step 6: Downgrade options

Downgrade at next renewal (standard)

  • When: Downgrade takes effect at your next renewal date
  • Cost: Receive credit or price reduction on next invoice
  • Best practice: Standard approach for downgrades
  • Benefit: Continue using current resources until end of billing period

Immediate downgrade (contact support)

  • When: Need immediate cost savings
  • Process: Contact support to request immediate downgrade
  • Credit: Prorated credit issued for unused time on current plan
  • Note: May require data cleanup if current usage exceeds new limits

Step 7: Data compatibility check

Critical: Before downgrading, ensure your current usage fits within new limits:

Check these resources:

  • Disk space: Current usage must be less than new plan limit
  • Databases: Number of databases must fit within new plan
  • Email accounts: Number of email accounts must fit within new plan
  • Addon domains: Number of domains must fit within new plan

If usage exceeds new limits:

  1. Reduce usage before downgrading:
    • Delete unused files to reduce disk space
    • Remove unused databases
    • Delete unnecessary email accounts
    • Remove unused addon domains
  2. Alternatively, choose a higher-tier downgrade that accommodates current usage

Step 8: Confirm downgrade

  1. Review downgrade summary
  2. No immediate payment required
  3. Click Confirm or Submit
  4. Downgrade scheduled for next renewal

Step 9: Downgrade processing

  • Scheduled: Downgrade processes automatically at next renewal date
  • Email confirmation: Receive confirmation that downgrade was scheduled
  • Reminder: Receive reminder email before downgrade date
  • After downgrade: New plan limits take effect, pricing reduced

Upgrade vs downgrade: Billing explained

Upgrade billing:

  • Immediate upgrade: Pay prorated difference for remaining billing period
  • Next renewal upgrade: No immediate charge, full new price at next renewal
  • Example (immediate): R200/mo plan β†’ R400/mo plan, 10 days left = Pay ~R67 now, then R400/mo ongoing

Downgrade billing:

  • At renewal: Receive credit or reduced price at next invoice
  • Immediate (via support): Prorated credit issued for unused time
  • Example (at renewal): R400/mo plan β†’ R200/mo plan = Next invoice will be R200 instead of R400

Renewal date unchanged:

  • Upgrades and downgrades do not change your renewal date
  • Billing cycle remains the same (e.g., monthly, annual)
  • Only the monthly/annual cost changes

What happens during upgrade/downgrade

No downtime:

  • Website remains online: No interruption to website or email
  • Seamless transition: Changes applied without service disruption
  • DNS unchanged: Nameservers and DNS records remain the same

Resource limits updated:

  • Disk space: New limit applied (higher for upgrade, lower for downgrade)
  • Bandwidth: New monthly bandwidth allowance
  • Email accounts: New maximum email account limit
  • Databases: New database limit
  • Addon domains: New addon domain limit

Verifying the change:

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin after upgrade/downgrade processes
  2. Check resource limits shown on main dashboard
  3. Verify disk space quota matches new plan
  4. Check Services β†’ My Services in the client area to see updated plan name

Special considerations

Downgrade restrictions:

  • Cannot downgrade below usage: Must reduce usage to fit within new plan limits first
  • Email account limits: Must delete email accounts if exceeding new plan limit
  • Database limits: Must consolidate or remove databases if over limit
  • Domain limits: Must remove addon domains if exceeding new plan

Upgrade capacity:

  • No usage restrictions: Can upgrade regardless of current usage
  • Instant resource increase: New resources available immediately after upgrade
  • Migration not required: Upgrade happens on same server (no data transfer needed)

Multiple upgrades/downgrades:

  • You can upgrade and downgrade as many times as needed
  • Each change is prorated fairly
  • No penalties for frequent plan changes

Common upgrade/downgrade issues

Issue: Cannot downgrade β€” usage exceeds new limits

If downgrade is blocked:

  1. Log in to DirectAdmin
  2. Check current usage of disk space, databases, email accounts, domains
  3. Reduce usage to fit within new plan:
    • Delete old files and backups
    • Remove unused databases
    • Delete inactive email accounts
    • Remove unused addon domains
  4. Retry downgrade after reducing usage

Issue: Upgrade not processing after payment

If upgrade payment succeeded but plan not upgraded:

  1. Wait 30-60 minutes for automatic processing
  2. Check Services β†’ My Services to verify upgrade status
  3. Check your email for upgrade confirmation or errors
  4. Contact support if not processed after 2 hours

Issue: Want to cancel scheduled downgrade

If you scheduled a downgrade but changed your mind:

  1. Log in to the client area
  2. Go to Services β†’ My Services
  3. Click the service with scheduled downgrade
  4. Look for "Cancel Downgrade" or similar option
  5. If option not available, contact support before downgrade date

Issue: Wrong plan selected

If you upgraded/downgraded to the wrong plan:

  • Before processing: Cancel the upgrade order if payment not yet made
  • After processing: Contact support immediately to reverse the change
  • Immediate fix: Request another upgrade/downgrade to the correct plan

Alternatives to upgrading

Before upgrading, consider these alternatives:

Optimise your website:

  • Caching: Enable WordPress caching plugins to reduce resource usage
  • Image optimisation: Compress images to reduce disk space and bandwidth
  • Database cleanup: Remove spam comments, post revisions, and unused data
  • Code optimisation: Fix inefficient code causing high CPU usage

Resource cleanup:

  • Delete old backups consuming disk space
  • Remove unused email accounts
  • Delete unused databases
  • Clear log files

Content Delivery Network (CDN):

  • Use Cloudflare or other CDN to reduce bandwidth usage
  • Offload static files (images, CSS, JS) to CDN
  • Reduce load on hosting server

When to contact support instead

In some cases, contact support rather than self-service upgrade/downgrade:

  • Custom requirements: Need specific resource adjustments not matching standard plans
  • Immediate downgrade: Want immediate downgrade with credit (not at renewal)
  • Complex migration: Moving from shared to VPS or dedicated server
  • Bulk changes: Upgrading/downgrading multiple services
  • Questions: Unsure which plan to choose
  • Technical issues: Upgrade/downgrade failed or encountered errors

Contact 0724 Hosting support for assistance with any of the above.

Best practices

  • Monitor usage regularly: Check DirectAdmin resource usage monthly
  • Upgrade proactively: Don't wait until you hit limits (performance degrades before limits are reached)
  • Start small: For new sites, start with a smaller plan and upgrade as you grow
  • Backup before changes: Always maintain current backups before upgrading/downgrading
  • Review annually: Reassess hosting needs once per year
  • Use immediate upgrades: If resources are urgently needed, use immediate upgrade
  • Schedule downgrades at renewal: To maximize value from current billing period
