What is the new Outlook?

Microsoft is gradually replacing the classic Outlook desktop app with a new web-based version called "Outlook for Microsoft 365" or "New Outlook". This version works on Windows 11, Windows 10, and macOS. If you see a toggle labelled "Try the new Outlook" in your current Outlook app, you are running the new version.

If you are using Outlook 2016, 2019, or 2021 (the classic desktop app), see our Outlook Classic setup guide instead.

What you will need

Before you start, have the following information ready:

  • Your full email address (e.g. you@yourdomain.co.za)
  • Your email password
  • Incoming mail server (IMAP): mail.yourdomain.co.za
  • Outgoing mail server (SMTP): mail.yourdomain.co.za

You can find these details in your DirectAdmin control panel under Email Accounts, or in your 0724 Hosting welcome email.

Step 1: Open account settings

  1. Open the new Outlook application
  2. Click on Settings (gear icon) in the top right corner
  3. Select Accounts from the left sidebar
  4. Click Add account or Email accounts

Step 2: Choose advanced setup

The new Outlook will attempt to auto-configure your account. For 0724 Hosting email, manual configuration ensures correct SSL settings:

  1. Enter your email address and click Advanced options
  2. Check the box labelled Let me set up my account manually
  3. Click Connect
  4. Select IMAP as the account type

Step 3: Configure IMAP settings

Enter your incoming mail server details:

  • IMAP server: mail.yourdomain.co.za (replace with your actual domain)
  • Port: 993
  • Encryption method: SSL/TLS
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email password

Click Next to continue.

Step 4: Configure SMTP settings

Enter your outgoing mail server details:

  • SMTP server: mail.yourdomain.co.za (same as IMAP server)
  • Port: 465
  • Encryption method: SSL/TLS
  • Require sign-in: Yes (checked)
  • Username: your full email address
  • Password: your email password

Click Next, then Done to complete the setup.

Why use IMAP?

IMAP keeps your email, folders, and read status synchronised across all your devices. When you delete an email on your phone, it disappears from your computer as well. This is essential for modern email workflows where you check email from multiple devices.

Troubleshooting common issues

Outlook cannot connect to the server

If you see a connection error:

  • Verify your email address and password are correct
  • Ensure you are using mail.yourdomain.co.za, not mail.0724.co.za
  • Check that both ports are correct: 993 for IMAP, 465 for SMTP
  • Confirm SSL/TLS is selected for both servers

Can receive but not send email

This usually indicates an SMTP configuration problem:

  • Verify the SMTP port is 465 with SSL/TLS enabled
  • Ensure "Require sign-in" is enabled for the outgoing server
  • Confirm your SMTP username is your full email address, not just the part before @
  • Some ISPs block port 465; try port 587 with STARTTLS as an alternative

Authentication keeps failing

If Outlook repeatedly asks for your password:

  • Retype your password carefully, checking for typos
  • Check with 0724 Hosting support that your email account is active and not suspended
  • Verify your password works by logging into webmail at mail.yourdomain.co.za
  • Remove and re-add the account if the problem persists

Difference between new Outlook and Outlook Classic

The new Outlook uses a simplified interface and stores some data in the cloud, similar to Outlook.com. Outlook Classic is a traditional desktop application that stores email locally. Both support the same IMAP and SMTP protocols for connecting to 0724 Hosting email.
